ABOUT OUR AU PAIRS
What is an Au Pair?
AU PAIR /əʊ ˈpɛə; French o pɛr/
“on par” or “equal” in French, is a term for a child care provider who lives with a host family as part of an international cultural exchange program.
Au pairs and EduCare companions are typically young international visitors who travel to the United States on a J-1 Visitor Exchange Visa to acquire a better understanding and appreciation of American life while living with an American family and caring for their young children.

What is an Au Pair’s Role Within the Family
Our goal is to place au pairs who become a part of the family as they provide day-to-day support for both parents and children. The au pair model arose during the post-World War II era that saw the move away from domestic servants as a source of child care. The use of au pairs first became popular in Europe, where people wanted a child care relationship based on a mutually beneficial relationship. Following that model, our au pairs and companions are more than employees and become full-fledged family members, sharing a cultural exchange experience that often leads to a lasting relationship with the host family.

What is an Au Pair’s Role in Cultural Education
Hosting an au pair means you will have access to up to 45 hours a week of child care, during which your children will gain a wider cultural perspective by learning about the culture of the au pair’s home country. No matter what their age, children may learn to like a wider variety of foods, begin learning a second language, and come to appreciate songs, stories and holidays based in another culture. Au pairs on our Au Pair or Extraordinaire programs care for children of all ages – infants from three months of age, pre-school and school age. EduCare companions are au pairs who care exclusively for older children who are in school for a full five days a week.
All au pairs and companions make a commitment to participate in the program for 12 months. If an au pair is in good standing at the end of 12 months, they have an option to apply for an extension of duration of stay to continue their participation an additional 6, 9 or 12 months.
If you are eager to learn about another culture by hosting an au pair who, in turn, provides child care assistance, then one of our program options can meet your expectations.
