VOLUNTEERING

Meet your global neighbour with our Global Awareness program

Volunteering is an important part of American life. With Au Pair in America’s unique Global Awareness program you can volunteer in many different places including elementary and middle school classrooms, giving you the opportunity to share your culture, customs and language with young American children. Au Pair in America au pairs not only provide childcare but are also active in their local communities.

Global Awareness, a unique volunteer program sponsored by Au Pair in America, is designed to foster a greater knowledge of the diversity and variety of cultures the world has to offer. You will go into elementary school classrooms, libraries, local bookstores, cub scouts and brownie groups and other areas of interest to children to share your culture with them. You will be able to present a wide variety of topics and all the presentations are interactive and fun for the children!

Global Awareness highlights the cross-cultural aspect of the au pair cultural exchange experience. The intention is to promote multi-cultural understanding and appreciation between our host families, au pairs, and community counselors as well as with the communities where our au pairs live. Especially important is the formation of positive first impressions of people from other cultures in young children.

As a Global Awareness participant you will support existing curriculum or present age-appropriate materials aimed at enhancing multi-cultural knowledge. Au pairs often present mini-language lessons to pre-school children, offering vocabulary, stories in other languages, and other fun activities highlighting either a specific language or a series of different languages during “reading hour” at local libraries. It’s all about teaching American children about your culture, in a fun way.

“60 kids will go home today knowing more about the world than when they first arrived at school this morning.” Elementary school teacher

About Cultural Exchange

Just another way we bring the world together

The Global Awareness Vision

With ongoing opportunities to not only “meet our global neighbor” but also to build “cross-cultural bridges,” the aim is to encourage better understanding of other cultures, improve communication between cultures, and support the concept of mutual acceptance. Our Global Awareness goal is to emphasize that cultural diversity is a source of enrichment rather than a source of confusion and strife. And you can play a part in all of this!

The Value of Cultural Exchange

Cultural exchange is a way to expose children to a bigger world. A world in which people speak different languages and participate in different traditions, a world of other cultures. We spark an interest in people who may not look the same, certainly don’t speak the same, but in so many ways are very similar. Au Pair in America is committed to supporting successful cultural exchanges for all its participants. We support the AIFS mission of “bringing the world together.
